Palm Beer Explosion

While weaving in and out of traffic escaping from a strike in the mountains we ran in to a man with what looked

like a meat cleaver strapped to his back. My host said oh let’s stop him. I didn’t know what was going on as they were

speaking Malayalam. We followed the man on his motorcycle to a pineapple patch. They said come on quickly. I had

slacks on the keep getting stuck on the spines of the pineapple plants so I was a little slow. The guys were wearing jeans

so they tore through the pineapple patch. The Abraham my host said look up Lisa. The man climbed up a very very tall

palm tree in a couple of seconds to attach a little bucket to catch the juice from the highest point of the palm. The idea

is the juice has been filtered from the ground. The higher it is thus the more filtered it becomes. Then they told me the

man would come back in five days to collect the juice. From this they would make palm beer called Toddy. Our host said

goodbye but the man beckoned us to follow him. We once again followed him like Alice in wonderland following the

little white rabbit. We stopped at an old building. He beckoned us down the steps and we entered in to a Palm beer bar.

This consisted of 6 or 7 old me sitting at tables in the togas drinking palm beer. They had rolled up their togas so it made

it look as if they were wearing shorts. Alcohol has been recently banned in this state so the Alcohol consumption has

increased 87% over the last 6 months. The only legal alcohol is the natural palm beer and coconut beer. We purchased

a bottle to drink on our boat ride through the back water. The owner wouldn’t let us leave until we tried some first. I

thought it was very good. He understood enough English to correct my host who told me it was 15 % alcohol. He was

corrected and told us it was 10 percent alcohol. We were instructed to drink it within three hours and to open the top

periodically or the bottle would explode. We were in a Mercedes so our drivers said no don’t open it or it will go all over

the inside of the car. Because we didn’t open it and let out the gases of the fermentation, the bottled exploded as had

been predicted and covered us with the delicious palm beer as well as the Mercedes!
